You know that feeling you get when something new is about to happen? Plans start to fall into place, anticipation starts building up, you start to get that yummy excited feeling in your stomach and then at last! The thing you have been waiting for is finally here! It has begun! Well, that is how we felt about a year ago, when the Durbanville PM congregation was just starting out, but it is also what we are experiencing now, when we think of what is still to come. Looking back at everything God has done in and through each one over the past year, definitely gives cause for celebration.
On Sunday, 5 March 2017, Durbanville PM celebrated our first birthday as a congregation. We are one year old. Can you believe it! We’re a toddler now, and we’ve just started to crawl. As with any birthday, we saw it fit to use the opportunity to eat good food and spend time in fellowship after the service. Even though this is always good and fun, it was not the highlight of the night. What stood out most was experiencing the presence of God through worship and being challenged through good preaching.
During his message, Kevin Samuel spoke about some things that are crucial to our walk with the Lord, but also vital for our growth in Christ as a congregation and a part of the body of Christ. Where are you going? Are you following your own will and desires, or are you laying it aside so that your own self can be crucified with Christ, so that He can live through you? We heard in this sermon that following Jesus doesn’t mean we simply copy and paste his deeds, but that it means we follow him all the way to the cross, to die to ourselves, because we can never be perfect Christians, but Christ can, and He will live through us if we are willing to lay our lives, and our own will down. It is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us! (Gal2:20)
From this revelation and being reminded once again how great God is, we headed into a time of worship. After a while of joyful praise and many experiencing the freedom there is in God and praising Him, it felt like He started to spoil us with more and more of Himself. One after the other, people were stepping out with prophetic songs, leading us all into more admiration and love for our Father. Certainly, if we could, we would stay in that place forever!
It is here now that we find ourselves. Just starting to crawl, experiencing more and more, and becoming stronger as a family and stronger in Christ. It is in this place that we feel we need to linger. The place where our core muscles are growing and we develop new essential skills. Here, on our knees, in prayer, in the word of God and worship, is where we will become stronger, and grow into a mature people, who run with all we have for the glory of our God! How exciting it is!
